Acupuncture and Gastrointestinal Tract

In today’s times, Gastrointestinal Tract (GIT) disorders have become extremely common and they are not only painful but are extremely unpleasant and recurring at the same time. Frequently occurring GIT disorders include the ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease, gastritis, gastro-oesophageal reflux, etc. There is also the category of functional GIT disorders which include functional dyspepsia and the irritable bowel syndrome which is usually described through the presence of continual GIT symptoms.

All of us suffer from acid reflux at some point in our lives and it is the condition when the stomach acid comes back into our throat or esophagus and this is indicated by the burning sensation mainly experienced in the throat region and it can even lead to a more serious condition called the gastro-esophageal reflux whose symptoms include chest pain, wheezing and coughing. Acupuncture has been extremely effective in treating this condition.

Constipation is another very commonly occurring health condition which is characterized with the passage of dry, hard bowel movements which in turn makes the passing of the stool, a very painful experience. People who are often constipated have very infrequent bowel movements and they also experience stretching of the sphincters which can ultimately cause anal fissures. Acupuncture has been extremely successful in the treatment of constipation which divides the condition of constipation into two categories, deficient and excess type. The excess type usually results from Qi stagnation and heat and the deficiency type is believed to be caused due to cold. Acupuncture has been found to be extremely beneficial in the treatment of heat constipation but with cold constipation the recovery is found to be a little slow.
